Thousands head to Fountain Hills looking to buy art© The Arizona Republic, February 21, 2003 FOUNTAIN HILLS - He suffered blindness twice and underwent six eye operations to regain his sight. Today, images earn him a living. Known as The Arizona Kid, Carlos Hadaway is one of about 450 artists featured at this weekend's Great Fair in Fountain Hills. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Saturday, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, with a hot-air balloon race starting at 7 a.m. Sunday. Arriving in everything from RVs to Rolls-Royces, an estimated 135,000 people will descend on Fountain Hills for the 23rd annual fair. The fair will be along the Avenue of the Fountains at Fountain Park. The three-day event attracts travelers from as far away as Canada and Europe who can't wait to spend money on unique art collections. Hadaway's interest in art came from the need to draw to overcome dyslexia. A professional cowboy by trade, Hadaway started drawing images of the mountain men and cattle herders he rode with. His art became popular among collectors. "It didn't take me long to figure out, on a good month, I might make $600 herding cattle. But I could sell a painting for $3,000," Hadaway said.
